Big Changes for Midsize Cat

Jaguar just cant seem to leave their S-Type alone. After an update in 2002, a short four years after its introduction, the classic S-Type goes under the pen for yet a third revision. Of course mid-cycle facelifts are hardly abnormal in the car business, with the last one featuring much needed improvements inside the cabin. This 2005 update refines the car yet further, while delivering technical enhancements as well.

While some critics have spoken against the S-Types retro styling, it was a smart business move for Jaguar. After all, paying homage to the great Mark I and Mk II saloons of the early 60s has allowed the legendary brand to recreate one of the most famous shapes in luxury sedan history. Most anyone with any knowledge about cars can spot an S-Type from a mile away in a split second, and brand recognition sells cars.

The upcoming revision concentrates on ironing a few of the models visual clashes in order to create a smoother, more cohesive look. The S-Types hood has been recast, and instead of being formed of sheetmetal will now be crafted from aluminum. Just below, more pronounced arches and lines around the four circular headlamps bring attention to a repositioned grille, now finished in a matte chrome mesh similar to the S-Type R, and fitted in a more upright position. Beneath the grille a revised air dam with sporty intakes and cross-mesh pattern appears better integrated into the overall design.

To accompany the classy new face is an equally impressive tail end. Much like the front, its more upright and features new lights and a revised decklid. These changes, as well as the 60s look of a heavily arched roof and the deep slash mark which runs from front fender to tail help improve the design. Overall the S-Type maintains truly traditional, classic Jaguar styling, separating it from the morphed look of the BMW 5-Series and the seemingly generic appearance of the Benz E-Class and Audi A6.

With the overhaul in 2002, much work was done to improve the S-Types interior accommodations, addressing leg and headroom problems as well as tactile quality. Aside from new instruments, which feature a more elegant typeface and chrome exterior rings, the 2005 model year update wont radically change the cars cockpit. For the Sport and R-models, aluminum trim will be offered for a brighter, more technical appearance. Also, a larger pallet of colors for both exterior and interior will be available, satisfying more individual tastes.

Improvements to the chassis and suspension are relatively minor as well. Jaguar has reportedly tinkered with the current settings to create a vehicle thats slightly more agile, responsive and fun to drive. The CATS system, available on the current S-Type, has truly helped in this department.

Currently, the S-Type has a pretty full variety of engines available. Basic models feature a 2.5 liter V6 engine borrowed from the entry-level X-Type; however it will not be sold in North America. Standard in the U.S. is an advanced 3.0 liter V6 that features variable valve timing and a varying manifold to produce an impressive 240 horsepower. Higher up in the model range is a 300 horsepower 4.2 liter V8, shared with the full-size XJ8 4.2 sedan and XK8 coupe and convertible. At the top of the heap is the S-Type R, which features a 400-hp supercharged version of the aforementioned V8 unit. All engines, except the 3.0-L V6 that comes standard with a 5-speed manual, are equipped with a 6-speed ZF automatic gearbox.

While the car wont be available until sometime later in 2004, the updated S-Type will make its debut at the Detroit auto show next month. The modifications will no doubt be popular among Jaguar fans, who for the most part abhor radical change when it comes to their favorite marque. All said the new S-Type should boost Jaguars fortunes in the midsize luxury segment.
