Styling Updates are Subtle but 300-HP V6 is Anything But

Having attained the title as the most popular sports car in North America nearly every year since its launch, Nissan has chosen to update its iconic 350Z sports coupe and roadster for 2006. Now in its fourth model year with over 100,000 units sold, the Z will undergo its first update, increasing specification in coupe mode, and making minor changes on both models to improve value and sporting character.

Like Porsches 911 Club Coupe, Nissan didnt choose to launch the new in the hustle and bustle of a major auto show but amongst a crowd that truly admires the Z in particular. This coming years model was shown for the first time at the 18th International Z Car Convention in Syracuse, New York, which took place in mid August.

Speaking of the occasion, Mark McNabb, VP and General Manager of Nissan North America said, “Were proud to once again be participating in this great grassroots Z gathering,” He also added, “Were also pleased that our loyal Z owners will be among the first to see the enhanced 2006 350 Z model.”

Highlights from the event, which took place on the 15th to 19th of August, included a track day at the historic Watkins Glen road course, an autocross competition, drifting demonstration, charitable auction, car show, and an appearance by Yutaka Katayama, also known as Mr. K, or Mr. Z for his involvement in the Z-project.

As far as the new models exterior and interior go, Im inclined to agree with McNabbs enhanced comment. The updates that constitute the revision include new headlights with xenon low and high beams, LED tail lamp clusters and a new grille. The lightweight forged five-spoke 18- and 19-inch wheels first seen on the special 35th Anniversary Edition will also be made available as an option on Coupe models.

While visual changes may rate low on the Zs exterior and interior, theres more beneath the skin. As of 2006, all Zs featuring the 6-speed manual gearbox will have an output increase to 300-horsepower, while models equipped with the 5-speed automatic gearbox are rated at 287-horsepower. Commensurately the manual loses a little torque, from the previous cars (and automatic-equipped Zs) 274 lb-ft to 260.

Speed-sensitive power steering also makes its debut on the newly shaped models for greater feel at high speeds and easier low-speed maneuverability.

Replacing the limited edition 35th Anniversary model will be a new Grand Touring Coupe model that will act as the range-topper. Standard to this car are 18- and 19-inch wheel and tire packages, Brembo brakes, front and rear spoilers, as well as Nissans Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) stability control system.

Rounding out the additions are two new metallic paint colors and MP3 capability for the Bose CD stereo system.

It also should be mentioned that Nissan has improved the Zs interior in
recent years, with higher quality plastics and better fit and finish.
It doesnt offer a premium experience yet, but its at least
respectable. The 2006 model should enhance the recent improvements, but only a full road test, coming in the near future, will confirm this.
