Specifications
Do you want an inexpensive SUV that is comfortable on the highways but have the option of taking your rig off the highway occasionally? The 2009 Jeep Patriot might be the vehicle for you.
The Patriot is one of the cheapest SUVs on the market. The base models in its class, it comes in $1000 less then the Kia Sportage, $2000 less then the Hyundai Tucson and $4000 less then the unimpressive Dodge Nitro. Built on the same platform as the Jeep Compass, the Patriot is considered more of an SUV whereas the Compass is decidedly a car-like crossover. It also shares the same platform with the Dodge Caliber.
The Patriot comes in the Sport model and the Limited with the Sport also coming in an E package. All three models come in a choice of front wheel drive and four-wheel drive and all come standard with the same 2.4-Liter 4 cylinder DOHC 16 valve Dual VVT (Variable Valve Timing) engine. This engine produces 172 hp but is sluggish moving the 3575 lb vehicle - 0 to 60 mpg in 10.8 seconds is definitely more turtle then hare-like. The Sport 2WD version also comes with the option of the 2.0-Liter 4 cylinder 16 valve Dual VVT engine that produces 158 hp. Fuel consumption is similar on both the front-wheel drive and 4WD models and engine types at around 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with the manual transmission.
Both the Sport and the Limited come with a 5 speed manual transmission. For those that prefer an automatic CVT or continuously variable transmission, there are two systems from which to choose. The Freedom Drive Iâ„¢ is mostly for on-road use and is available in both the Sport and Limited as well as the 2WD and 4WD models. The 4WD models are also available with the Freedom Drive IIâ„¢, that is far better for off-road use as it splits torque better between the front and rear axles. It is only available in the 4WD models and impacts fuel consumption significantly on the highway, lowering the on highway performance from 27mpg in the Limited edition to 22mpg.
The MacPherson struts in the front and independent multi-link rear suspension is designed to allow for smooth, agile and responsive handling but instead offer only an acceptable ride - nothing more. Rack and pinion steering, unique shock tuning and high-strength steel springs mixed with Electronic Stability Program (1), all speed traction control, hydraulic Brake Assist and Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) all work together admirably to keep the four wheels on the road at all times.
The interior of the 2009 Jeep Patriot is typical of Jeep quality and design - a little rough around the edges. The Satin Silver bezel looks sharp but does not wear as well as similar material in higher end vehicles. Features like the stain and odor resistant YES Essential seat material and the 60/40 split rear reclining seats as well as options like the heated leather front seats, optional premium sound system and navigation system all keep the Patriot at par with the competition.
You get what you pay for in the 2009 Jeep Patriot. It as the classic ‘go anywhere’ styling Jeep is famous for and mild off-road capabilities. The overall handling is acceptable and the interior is below par but the options and features can bring it up a notch. For a young couple on a budget that enjoys a little adventure on the weekends, this is a great vehicle. For larger families or people that want extreme adventure, keep looking.
