Jeeps answer to the HUMMER, the Wrangler Unlimited takes the history and established consumer confidence in the original Wrangler and stretches it out to be a four door, five-passenger off-road utility vehicle.
First hitting trails for the 2007 model year, the Wrangler Unlimited is still a Wrangler from bumper to bumper and all the many parts in between. The round headlights, seven-slot grill, folding front windshield, wide fender flares, trapezoidal wheel openings and open-air driving experience are all pure Jeep signature touches. Although many were shocked when the rumors began to fly about Jeep stretching and lengthening the iconic vehicle, the overall finished product retains the rugged distinctly Jeep good looks.
Available in three trim models, the Wrangler Unlimited comes in the base X model, the Sahara and the off-road demon, the Rubicon. The X and Sahara come in both two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive while the Rubicon is 4WD only. All three are powered by Jeep’s 3.8-Liter overhead valve 60 degree V6 engine that produces 202 hp and 237 lb-ft torque. The new engine is quieter, lighter and more powerful per cubic inch then the old V8 that used to be found inside the smaller Wrangler. The 3.8L V6 also maintains higher torque at speeds above 3400 rpm, allowing for an expanded operating range. For a V6, the engine is a thirsty one however at 16m mpg in the city and 21 on the highway.
All three models come standard with Jeep’s six-speed manual transmission. However, if the manual transmission is not in your liking, there is a choice of a four-speed automatic on all models as well but you will pay for the convenience at the gas pump - gas mileage drops a mile on both the city driving and highway.
With a towing capacity of 3500 lbs, the Wrangler Unlimited is a mediocre tow vehicle. Often pictured towing a traditional two door Wrangler or earlier model Jeep, the reality is a little different considering the gross vehicle weight of even the early models is over 3000 pounds. Don’t try this at home, kids!
The Trail Rated® badge on the Jeep Wrangler Unlimited shows that the vehicle is designed to perform well off-road in the following categories: traction, ground clearance, maneuverability, articulation and water fording. Because of this off-road distinction, the vehicle offers a steady ride with stiff handling. Jeep has beefed up the axles to match the larger drive shaft, stiffer housing, larger pinion bearing and above-center pinion mounting the Wrangler to handle greater load and torque when off-roading. The Electronic Sway Bar Disconnect system allows through a flip of a switch the sway bar to be automatically disengaged while driving in 4WD-low and under 18 mph. This gives the front wheels a 33% greater range of articulation - how much the wheels are allowed to drop or compress.
For off-road driving, all Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds come with Tru-Lok® Locking Differentials while the X, XRD and Sahara models can come in two-wheel drive or with the part-time Command-Trac® a four-wheel drive system. The Rubicon comes standard with Rock-Trac®, a two-speed transfer case that allows the vehicle to crawl at even slower speeds but with an increase in torque at the wheels - perfect for rocky terrain or traversing fallen logs.
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has much of the same functional features as the original Wrangler such as the YES Essentials Fabric is stain, water and odor resistant that if they get too dirty, you can take the garden hose and soak them down. Features such as the hidden bin in the cargo area, glove box and center console keep items safe from passing eyes. Power locking doors and power windows are a step up from the older Wranglers leaving the doors still easy to remove even with the addition of all the electronics.
The optional MyGig® Multimedia System w/ GPS Navigation allows you to take your favorite music, photos and DVDs along for the ride. Inside is a 30 gb hard drive so you can upload over 4000 of your favorite songs or a few thousand photos through either a disc or a USB 2.0 port. When the vehicle is in park, movies, Sirius TV and photos can be played on the dashboard nav screen. Bluetooth technology allows for hands free calling and each Wrangler comes with a one-year subscription to Sirius Satellite Radio.
The Wrangler Unlimited will one day be comparable to the old icon of American off-road history but Jeep has a few improvements that must be met before it is on even ground with the original Wrangler.Reliability is one important issue that needs work. A great vehicle for a couple that enjoys a little adventure or must tow a small camper or boat, the Wrangler Unlimited has a long way yet to be the ideal family vehicle but when you think it took over sixty years for Jeep to get where they are at today, maybe the Unlimited is farther along then we originally thought.
