Specifications
The 2009 Nissan Altima defies the stereotype that economical midsize sedans are, by nature, aesthetically drab and underwhelming in the area of performance. The Altima delivers all the things you would expect from a family sedan: economy, utility, and safety. Where the Altima stands out, though, is in its delivery of the things you wouldn’t expect from a mild-mannered sedan: performance, style, and a memorable driving experience. Read our review of the 2009 Nissan Altima to find out if it’s the car for you.
The Facts
Nissan made few changes to the 2009 Altima, as the body style is nearly identical to that of the previous model year. New things for 2009 include an upgraded base model (now includes a trip computer and power mirrors) and more available options (e.g., dual-zone climate control and a sunroof). Here is a breakdown of the new Altima’s vital stats:
- MSRP: $19,900 - $29,380
- Fuel economy: 23 mpg city/32 mpg highway
- Horsepower: 175 horsepower (base), 270 horsepower (3.5 L V6)
- Safety: Five out five stars on NHTSA frontal offset and side impact crash test, four out of five stars on rollover test
- Warranty: 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty, 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty
The Good
The Altima’s engine offers a remarkably strong performance for a midsize sedan and excellent fuel economy. The four-cylinder engine that comes standard on the base model packs 175 horsepower, which makes it one of the most powerful engines available in its class. Nissan has also equipped Altimas with automatic transmissions with Continuously Variable Transmission technology, which saves fuel by forgoing gears. Additionally, drivers have praised the 2009 Altima for its sleek, stylish appearance, both inside and out. Thanks to its responsive steering, the Altima also handles well and has a surprisingly sporty feel to it. Last but not least, the Altima has performed well on all major safety tests, earning a “good” rating (the highest possible) from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The Bad
Although an indisputably impressive vehicle, the Altima does have a few shortcomings. The vehicle’s cramped backseat is one of its most-criticized faults. The legroom in the back is almost nonexistent, as is the head room. On the base model Altima, Nissan also chose not to offer electronic stability control, which many consider an essential safety feature. Finally, the Altima has a complicated and confusing grouping of available options that are also overpriced. The Altima’s option packages have been described as “feast or famine,” as buyers have to include an expensive package of options just to include the one or more they actually want. This structure makes it difficult to tease out superfluous options from the more essential ones.
