Specifications
Toyota debuted an all-new Matrix for 2009. Sportier, sexier, with phenomenal cargo space, the new Matrix is set to attract a young crowd that needs versatility in their vehicle. The upright sitting stance that allows for easy access and comfortable all-over visibility are attracting buyers of all ages however as the practical vehicle appeals to all types.
The Matrix is built on the reliable Corolla platform. Available in the base model, the S and the sporty XRS trim levels, each offers its own advantages.
The base model Matrix comes with the 1.8-Liter DOHC 16-valve dual independent VVT-i 4-cylinder engine that produces 132 hp at 6000 rpm and 128 lb-ft. at 4400 rpm. With the five-speed manual, the Matrix gets an impressive 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway with a slight decrease with the four-speed automatic to 25 mpg and 31 mpg respectively.
The S and XRS come with the 2.4-Liter DOHC 16-valve VVT-i 4-cylinder engine that produces an additional 26 hp over the 1.8L and an extra 34 lb.-ft. Fuel consumption drops from the 1.8L engine at 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway with the five-speed manual and 21 mpg and 29 mpg. The S also comes in an all-wheel drive model that comes standard with the four-speed automatic. The fuel consumption again drops, this time to 20 mpg and 26 mpg respectively.
Handling of the 2009 Toyota Matrix is sound and stable although not exciting. The vehicle absorbs the bumps and potholes in the road but can be unsettled at high speeds. Standard suspension on the base model and 2WD S model includes independent MacPherson struts in the front with torsion beam rear suspension as well as front and back stabilizer bars. The XRS and AWD models have the same front suspension but include an independent double-wishbone suspension in the rear with front and rear stabilizer bars while the XRS includes sport bracing struts attached to the tower. The rack-and-pinion steering with power assist is standard on all models and makes for a light steering wheel.
Safety equipment includes an anti-lock brake system with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) with Brake Assist. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with Traction Control (TRAC) with an off switch is optional although comes standards in the XRS. All models come standard with front airbags for both the driver and passenger as well as seat-mounted side airbags. Active headrests and front and rear side curtain airbags are also standard as is the Toyota Direct Tire Pressure Monitor System (TPMS). Safety ratings are excellent for head on collisions, good for side on and good for rear end collisions.
The interior of the Matrix is fun and versatile with both excellent cargo space as well as comfortable seating for five people. The hard plastic decking in the cargo space makes it ideal for everything from muddy cycling gear to soaking wet and salty sailing gear. The rear seats fold flat as does the passenger seat allowing for cargo items up to eight feet long. Standard features such as the manual tilt and telescoping steering wheel along with the four way adjustable driver’s seat means the Matrix fits everyone comfortably and the 115V auxiliary power outlet is perfect for laptops, games or a fridge for long road trips. The standard AM/FM CD player with MP3/WMA and satellite capability and four speakers in the base model expands to a full JBL touch-screen DVD navigation system with AM/FM 6 disc in dash CD changer and Bluetooth with all the other features and an extra five speakers along with steering wheel mounted audio controls. You ask for it, you get it in the 2009 Toyota Matrix.
Built to keep pace with the Corolla but in a sportier package, we expect to see the Matrix enjoy the same automotive longevity as the iconic sedan.
