2010 Mustang Pulls Visual Cues from Ultra-Hot Shelby GT500!
Ford blew its own 12.01 am, Tuesday, November 18, 2008 embargo by releasing photos and video of its 2010 Mustang early yesterday afternoon (if you’re on the West Coast that is) on its official microsite.
Three opportunities to virtually experience the new 2010 Mustang await, starting with “Mustang Stories” and then followed by “See the 2010” and “Experience It”. Mustang stories have nothing to do with the 2010, so skip this unless you’re interested in actual stories submitted by Mustang owners, some with recent models and others with classics (one from Utah with a garage-full… a red Shelby convertible in the litter). One story relates the sad tale of a ‘70 Boss 302 owner from California, Vince Fiorillo, who had to sell the love of his life to pay off his brother’s gambling problem and then later, while training for a bodybuilding tourney, broke his back and ended up disabled and unable to drive.
Click on “See the 2010” and the story begins with a brief video featuring a garage door opening and a blue 2010 Mustang poking its nose out while a red one drives by. A few close ups and three-quarter shots of the latter car burning rubber later, and viewers are prompted to burn some rubber themselves in a lifelike 360-degree spin. You can change the car’s color from a palette of nine hues, and then spin it again. After checking out the outside you can a link to see the new interior.
After all of the “teaser” photos we shared with you before this Mustang reveal the cabin’s design shouldn’t come as a surprise. Shedding more light on the subject allows for a better view, and a camera shot pointing upwards from the driver’s door shows a massive glass sunroof that almost entirely extends into the rear window, forming a glass canopy that will surly be a popular option. A click on either the “Gallery” or “Wallpapers” link will show additional photos, including a couple featuring a retro red interior that sports a unique white stripe down the center of each seat and complementary white stitching on the red leather seats. Not for the feint of heart, this interior would be the right pick for someone speculating on this car becoming collectible in the future.
A few things we can report on now include the addition of the Ford-Microsoft Sync system, plus a much nicer touch-screen audio-navigation system interface sporting SIRIUS Travelink and a reverse camera. Ford has also integrated its Easy Fuel capless refueling system, and as if to preemptively prepare the new ‘Stang for the young hooligans that will get behind its meaty leather-clad wheel, an SOS Post Crash Alert System is also part of the package.
The new 2010 Mustang carries forward with the 210-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 with 240 lb-ft of torque as standard equipment, mated up to either a five-speed manual gearbox or five-speed automatic, while the same transmission combos can be had with the 4.6-liter V8, but this engine now makes a maximum of 315-horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque, up 15-horsepower and 5 lb-ft of torque over the 2009 model thanks to cold air induction.
Ford’s impressive AdvanceTrac traction and stability control is now standard across the line, a smart move, and with the GT Premium model this system will be given a sport mode allowing a little more slip for spirited driving.
Seventeen painted alloy wheels are standard with eighteens optional, while such niceties as dual-zone climate control, a six-way powered passenger seat, and HID headlights will be available.
Overall the design of the interior is improved over the 2005 to present car, and its surfaces and switchgear look better made than ‘Stangs in showrooms now. Ford boasts a one-piece soft-touch instrument panel, which will no doubt be a big improvement over the hard plastic IP currently in use, while genuine aluminum trim will add to the upscale ambience. The seats and door panels are especially attractive, and the perforated leathers appear more upscale than hides used in today’s car. Whether the interior is good enough to lure import buyers away from their coupes and convertibles will have to await the hands-on report of one of our intrepid journalists on LA auto show floor.
The exterior design is an improvement over the old car too, and more like the Mustang concept that teased would-be buyers before the 2005 model surfaced. While the concept was seen first, the 2005 through 2008 production car was the initial design that got the internal Dearborn nod. Ford received such a positive response from the concept, however, that much of its design, especially at the front end, became the inspiration for the Shelby GT500. It appears that the popularity albeit limited numbers of Shelbys pushed Ford into pulling cues from its design for the new 2010 Mustang, which can clearly be seen in the car’s aggressively slanted headlight design and bulging hood, among other details.
The taillight design is all new, however, a modernized version of the current three vertical-bar lens that now features LED technology and a sequential turn signal at each side. More shapely than the rectangular taillights now in use, the 2010 Mustang certainly freshens up the car’s look with a design that can carry it well into the next decade.
One additional goody available that’s worth checking out on the microsite is an official order guide in PDF format, with all of the standard and optional features, colors, etc. Make sure to check out the site at www.fordvehicles.com/the2010mustang/ to get this PDF and virtually experience the 2010 Mustang first hand.
