Review
Bavarian Motor Works (BMW) has made some welcome revisions in its 2011 model X3. A crossover-style vehicle that the auto maker has been producing for several years, the latest version features exterior design updates, redefined handling, and cutting edge connectivity. The new X3 stands poised to compete on an even playing field with competing upscale crossovers from Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Infiti and Volvo.
Performance Specifications
BMW is marketing two versions of its 2011 X3, the xDrive28i and the xDrive35i. Both models come with an 8-speed automatic with manual assist transmission. Surprisingly, BMW is offering no manual transmission-equipped X3s in the U.S. market, nor can Americans purchase the the xDrive20d, 4-cyclinder diesel version domestically.
According to the auto maker, the 8-speed transmission delivers quicker acceleration in the lower gear spectrum as well as better fuel economy in the higher gears. In a passing situation, the engine has the ability to shift down directly from eighth to second to maximize acceleration.
The manufacturer's suggested retail price for the 2011 BMW X3 xDrive28i at entry level is $37,750, while the basic xDrive35i leaves the lot at just under $41,050.
Test Drive
Test ride reviews give kudos to the improved ride of the 2011 X3. While earlier versions delivered a somewhat rough on-the-road experience, the 2011 has upgraded with an all-new five-link rear axle assembly that delivers a considerably better ride. Some reviewers note a slight hitch just prior to gear changes, but otherwise approve the performance of the automatic transmission.
With standard all-wheel drive and the BMW proprietary handling-optimization xDrive system that allocates differing percentages of power to the front and rear wheels in response to road conditions, the BMW X3 is geared for superior handling in inclement weather.
Engine
The xDrive28i offers a 3.0 liter, 240 hp engine with 221 pound-feet of torque. Sufficiently powered to hit 60 mph from a standstill in under 7 seconds, the xDrive28i has plenty of oomph.
The xDrive35i is powered by an N55 turbocharged 3.0 liter engine with an inline 6-cylinder set-up. This revved-up model shaves 1.2 seconds from the 28i's 0-60 mph time (5.5 seconds), and can do up to 130 mph in the desert.
Interior Specifications
Although the 2011 X3 carries 3 inches in added length and an inch in width, the interior space still may seem a bit cramped, due to the enlarged center console up front. Taller folks may find headroom lacking. Additionally, the seating in back can be squeezed by long-legged drivers, and the back seat is not adjustable.
In a positive light, test drivers find the seats themselves comfortable and supportive, and give the optional sport chairs high marks. Three-dimensional surfaces, high-quality materials, and an impressive collection of cargo compartments and cup holders, and trays aim to optimize driver and passenger ambiance.
