Insuring a Mazda

When the name Mazda is mentioned, two things usually come to mind: performance and affordability. Despite their very affordable price tags, these vehicles tend to pack a wallop in terms of performance. They make it easy for people to afford cars that actually have a little extra pep. It comes as no surprise that they've been quite popular with drivers from all across the United States. In addition to being reasonably priced, these vehicles are relatively inexpensive to insure. With an average annual cost of $1,365.22, this automaker ranks fourth on a list of 36 vehicles. You can rest assured that your monthly premium should be quite reasonable when you own one. Of course, affordability is just one of the many perks of owning a model. Find out additional reasons for their affordable insurance costs below.

Brief History of the Brand

Like so many other Japanese car brands, Mazda started out well before World War II. It was founded in Hiroshima in 1920. Its founder, Jujiro Matsuda, originally named it the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company. The first of the brand's three-wheeled trucks debuted in 1931 and was dubbed the Mazda. The name was later adopted for the entire brand. Their first small sedan was produced near the end of the 1930s, but World War II came along and caused the automaker to suspend production for a considerable amount of time. The company is notable for helping to produce the first rotary engine and for being the first automaker to offer three different engine options. The first Mazdas debuted in the U.S. in 1970. They temporarily fell out of favor in the 1990s, but they hit their stride again in the early 2000s.

Cheap Prices Keep Rates Down

The main thing that makes these automobiles so affordable to protect is their low MSRPs. Pricing plays a very prominent role in the premium-calculation process. The Mazda3, for instance, has a starting MSRP of $15,200. The snazzy MX-5 Miata convertible can be had for as little as $23,470. If you want an affordable, well-equipped crossover, the CX-9's starting price of just under $30,000 is sure to pique your interest.

Non-Existent Theft Rates Also Help

Cars that are stolen regularly pose serious problems for car insurers. As a result, they tend to hike up premiums for cars that have high theft rates. This isn't an issue for these autos because they are not popularly targeted by thieves. The National Insurance Crime Bureau, or NICB, publishes top-ten lists of the most stolen automobiles in the United State. You won't find a single Mazda vehicle on any of those lists. As a result, these automobiles are especially cheap to protect.

Insurance Prices Stay Low with Good Safety Ratings

The other big thing that companies consider when calculating premiums is safety. Safer vehicles are less likely to result in exorbitant claims, so they tend to have lower premiums. These vehicles are quite safe in accidents of varying severity. The Mazda3, for example, has received four-star and perfect five-star ratings from the U.S. government. In crash tests, the CX-9 has received mostly "Good" ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. A couple "Marginal" ratings appear as well.

The average yearly cost to insure popular models includes:

  • CX-9 6-Cylinder Crossover - $1,302.00
  • Mazda3 4-Cylinder Sedan - $1,427.00
  • MX-5 Miata 4-Cylinder Convertible - $1,307.00
