All-New Infiniti G35 Coupe to Arrive at New York
At last year's North American International Auto Show, Infiniti presented themedia and public with a beautiful concept car blessed with a very unoriginal name. It was the Coupe concept, which aside from previewing the next generation G35 Coupe, kicked off their "line" design effort. With the concept, Infiniti took the existing car - one of their finest designs to date - and refined the look even further, making it sleeker and sportier without losing any of the original's elegance.
Infiniti followed up on the Coupe Concept by launching the redesigned G35 sedan. Though almost every aspect of the updated vehicle was different, the changes made to the exterior design were so subtle most people wouldn't have noticed any differences, unless they were pointed out. Beneath the mildly different appearance are a host of technical innovations that make the already good car even better to drive. Sporting a heavily revised version of the famed VQ35-series 3.5-liter V6 engine, the standard G35 ascended to the 300-horsepower crowd, giving it the power to compete with the Lexus IS 350 and twin-turbocharged BMW 335i. Other enhancements to the powerplant included the greater use of lightweight components and a reduction of internal friction, improving the engine's smoothness and refinement.
Since the sedan's launch earlier last year, everyone's been asking onequestion: when will the new G35 Coupe arrive? Well, news has it that Infiniti just released the first sketch of the production model.
Overall, the new G35 Coupe is bolder than the vehicle it is to replace, with L-shaped headlamps and a curved hood that recesses to both sides, which gives the fenders a peaked appearance. Much the same can be said with regards to the roof and rear fenders that also have peaks towards their outer edges.
There are minor differences between the concept vehicle and the newly released sketch. The sketch does not have the pointed bumper of the concept and it has a different lower valance with three separate intakes as opposed to the concept's two. Another difference that's slightly harder to notice is an additional line down the side of the vehicle below the shoulder line, which divides the side profile of the vehicle. Aside from these details, there are the usual concept to production changes. Standard door handles and side view mirrors replace the impractical touch-sensitive handles and reverse cameras. The so-called "katana" four-bar grille from the concept car, as well as the ten-spoke alloy wheels also look to be on their way to production.
Infiniti will be introducing the new G35 Coupe at the New York International Auto Show this April, along with another yet to be announced concept car. No information has been announced about its powertrain as of yet, but expect it to make six-speed manual and six-speed automatic gearbox variants available.
