Apple Co-Founder to Drive Hummer to South Pole

Hydrogen Hummers to be the Stars of New Movie

As unlikely as it sounds, its true. Steve Wozniak, co-founder of the worlds most friendly technology firm, is going to be rattling his way to the southernmost tip of planet Earth aboard the most unfriendly of vehicles: a Hummer. Joined by Apollo and moonwalk alumni Buzz Aldrin, the "Woz" will be setting out next December from McMurdo Station on Antarcticas Ross Island.

Formally known as a research trip, the expedition will feature a group of specially prepared although no-longer-in-production Hummer H1 Alphas modified to run on hydrogen fuel cells. Obviously expanding the H1s operational range, the convoy will journey hundreds, or perhaps thousands (the route has yet to be announced) of miles in temperatures ranging from slightly below freezing to almost -58° Fahrenheit.

Oddly enough, the group has received much support and advice from the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority, which has experience running hydrogen buses, although the exact effects of the extreme temperatures on the hydrogen fuel cells is obviously a point of some concern. The entire trip will be filmed in 3D for Titanic director James Cameron, who hopes to use the footage for an upcoming film.

Wozniak himself is unpredictably accustomed to driving such vehicles, and while an avid Segway enthusiast, (he even plays Segway polo) and relying on his Toyota Prius for longer trips, Wozniak also owns a Hummer, saying the Prius and Hummers environmental impacts cancel each other out. The inventor of the Apple II personal computer, Wozniak is one of the people responsible for the personal computer revolution of the 80s, before leaving Apple in 1985. While coming across as something of a geek, Wozniak nevertheless has a reputation for being quite witty, from the name of his upcoming autobiography (iWoz: From Computer Geek to Cult Icon: How I Invented the Personal Computer, Co-Founded Apple, and Had Fun Doing It) to his most famous quote; "Never trust a computer you cant throw out a window." Since leaving Apple "the Other Steve" (so nicknamed thanks to current Apple frontman, co-founder and friend Steve Jobs) has committed much of his time to the furthering of the gadget universe, creating various gizmos aimed at making life better for the average Joe. For example, Wozniak was previously working on a GPS-based system help to people locate normal items before moving on to create such popular products as the Sidekick cell phone.
