Aston Martin One-77 Supercar Unveiled in Geneva
Aston Martin's new One-77 supercar may not be a mid-engine exotic like Bugatti's Veyron Gran Sport, on display at this year's
Geneva Auto Salon, or Lamborghini's Murcielago LP 670-4 SuperVeloce, but it's commands just as much attention whether taking in its graceful yet aggressive shape or contemplating its 750-plus horsepower 7.3-liter V12.
The independent carmaker, under the direction of Dr. Ulrich Bez, will build just 77 examples, making it one of the most exclusive cars available today, although reports in Autoblog and CarAdvice last month have stated that they're not exactly flying off the order books. Economic woes are no doubt the issue, as the car will offer “more than enough” performance, commented Bez.
This 79th Geneva show is the first time this ultimate Aston has been fully exposed, and what a sight it is. A radical take on the classic front-engine A-M theme, the One-77 isn't for the faint of heart, and neither will its zero to 60 mph acceleration, expected to slot somewhere into the mid-threes. Top speed is
anyone's guess, but cars in this class normally top well over 200 mph, which is faster than most any of their owners ever take them.
Next to the complete car, Aston featured an exposed carbon-fiber and aluminum skeleton for all eyes to see, an impressive rolling chassis that quells any concerns of the new model being anything close to a re-skinned DBS.
While some might question the lack of interior photography as something out of the ordinary, the car's delivery schedule is stranger still. The first customer will receive his car in late 2009, while the remaining 76 will become available to One-77 buyers in 2010. The long span between the first and following production models leads speculative minds to question whether sales of this very special Aston are really as soft as reports have questioned. This point expanded, it would make sense to prolong delivery until 2010 when everyone hopes for and some predict a market rebound, along with commensurate celebration resulting in more deposits on One-77s.
No matter the market situation, which is plaguing all automakers except Ferrari these days, the One-77 is a spectacular automobile which will no doubt find a derriere for each driver's seat.
