Audi Unveils A3 TDI clubsport Concept
For the past 27 years, Volkswagen and Audi enthusiasts have gathered in Austria for the Lake Worther tour. This year, Audi has selected the event to unveil a new member of its “clubsport” concept family, a car that is based on the revised 2009 Audi A3.
Audi’s team has reworked the grille, giving it chromed vertical strakes, while the front valance is completely new with two giant intakes. To accommodate new 20-inch wheels and tires, the A3 clubsport quattro features substantially wider fender flares that have been riveted on for an authentic, race car look. Audi also fitted some serious stopping power in the form of carbon ceramic disc brakes, which not only give it fade-free high-performance braking, but worry-free durability.
Under its hood, the A3 features a tweaked version of Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter TDI engine, which is related to the 2.0-liter diesel fitted to the new Jetta TDI. The main difference is that in this application the engine makes 224 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque, a substantial hike up from the stock 140 hp. Audi predicts that the high-performance A3 clubsport TDI can hit 60 mph in less than 6.6 seconds, and achieve a top speed of over 150 mph.
The clubsport series of concept cars draws attention to Audi’s customization side; what will be interesting to see is if something becomes of the concept. Spy photos have already surfaced, as have rumors pertaining to the release of a clubsport version of the TT following last year’s concept. Who knows - the idea just might take off.
