BMW 5 Series ActiveHybrid Concept Preview
BMW is presenting a concept full-hybrid vehicle in the upper midrange segment of cars. The BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid offers an inline-six engine coupled with an electric drive that offers all of the power of a BMW while returning better than usual fuel efficiency. Following the work of the predecessors; the BMW X6 and 7 Series ActiveHybrid vehicles, the 5 Series ActiveHybrids are nothing entirely new for BMW, but they do have plenty to offer for the sedans.
Specifications
Details are still somewhat sketchy for the full specs of the Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid but the following is known:
- Pricing: Expectations are for a starting price $5,000 higher than the standard 5 Series’ $45,950 MSRP.
- Engine: inline turbocharged six-cylinder with a 300 horsepower coupled with a 54 horsepower electric motor.
- Transmission:An eight-speed automatic transmission.
- Fuel Economy: 20 miles per gallon city and 30 on the highway.
- Acceleration: The instant-on electric power boost of the engine is expected to increase the already impressive acceleration capability of the 5 Series.
Exterior Features
A nice new front bumper design was on the unveiled concept vehicle at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show and the rims for the car seemed much like Ginsu knives arranged in a wicked fashion. Other than that, the ActiveHybrid 5 Series seems like it will hold the same exterior stylings of the current 5 Series vehicles.
Performance
The availability of an electric-only city driving mode will allow for a more sedate performance for the 5 Series ActiveHybrid car as well as a predictive hybrid mode gives the driver options. The predictive hybrid mode uses satellite navigation technology to “look ahead” at the upcoming road conditions and determine which power requirements will best suit the upcoming conditions. For example: the navigation system may determine that there is a large downgrade coming up and turn off the gasoline engine in order to conserve fuel for the downhill stretch.
Conclusion
The ActiveHybrid 5 Series is a done deal for BMW. The only question at this point for those looking to purchase one is “when”, not “if”. The ActiveHybrid 7 Series has led the way for BMW and is sure to provide a solid foundation for those looking for the same technology in BMW’s flagship sedans.
