Ford Blows Detroit Show-Goers Away with New Taurus

It only makes sense, really. The car that is redefining the Lincoln experience is now directly responsible for the all-new 2010 Ford Taurus, a car so well executed that it might do for Ford what the original Taurus did when it w as introduced as 1986 model.
“The new Taurus sets the pace for Ford’s growing new car launch momentum,” stated Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas. “This sedan completely redefines expectations of what Taurus stands for – and helps further define what Ford is capable of delivering – quality, fuel-efficient vehicles featuring the latest technologies and head-turning design.”
Underpinning the new Taurus is Lincoln’s new MKS, a thoroughly revised version of the outgoing Taurus. Are you following along? And along with a unique shape with pleasing features, Ford promises sportier driving dynamics from the blue-oval car.
The interior is the big news, a disappointment to some when the original 500 debuted, albeit improved when morphed into the current Taurus. The new 2010 Taurus needs no excuses, with soft-touch plastics provided by an “innovative urethane tooling process”, good fit and finish and above average quality materials. The Multi-Contour Seats are extremely comfortable, adding to the overall quality experience. Overall interior design is modern and attractive, and it’s as spacious inside as ever.
“Taurus is our premium Ford flagship, and it casts a halo across the entire brand portfolio,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president for global product development.
Also interesting is the menu of top-tier electronics Ford promises to include, such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning, Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, MyKey parental programmability that can be “hooked up” to an associated iPhone app to monitor your car when out of your sight, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with Cross Traffic Alert, Rain-Sensing Wipers, EasyFuel capless refueling, Ford SYNC and Voice-Activated Navigation. A Sony-branded audio system is said to “deliver sound from a variety of sources, with an AM-FM tuner, SIRIUS Satellite radio, CD, DVD audio and an integrated 10 GB hard drive for storage of up to 2,400 songs.” Ordering this package will also give you an upgrade to the 10-speaker premium audio system.
“The new Taurus showcases what the Ford brand promise is – expressive design, class-leading technologies and an engaging driving experience,” said Jim Farley, Ford’s group vice president of Marketing and Communications. “To truly appreciate the new Taurus, you have to drive it. All of the experiences come together once you’re behind the wheel.”
Output will come from Ford’s award-winning 3.5-liter V6 Duratec tuned to provide 263 horsepower and 249 foot-pounds of torque, driving the front or all wheels via one of two six-speed automatic transmissions featuring SelectShift manual mode and steering wheel mounted paddles. The Duratec V6 is also ULEV-II emissions certified.
Ford also promises an upgrade to its EcoBoost V6 that will arrive with about 350-horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque while delivering fuel economy in the same neighborhood as the regular V6, itself touted a very fuel efficient powerplant when combined with the six-speed automatic.
Yes, the car will be quick, but it’s styling that inevitable gets people down to the showroom, and in this respect the Taurus should appeal to a broad spectrum of buyers. It pulls design cues from Ford of Europe’s award-winning lineup of cars, specifically the Mondeo, dropping the F-150 derived three bar grille initiated by the Fusion and now just about every car across the blue-oval lineup. So, in styling at least, the new Taurus points towards Ford CEO Alan Mulally’s initial desire to combine global efforts in order to cut costs, although it’s unlikely a car the size of the Taurus will find its way into the European marketplace. The new design looks sportier than the current car and should therefore pull in those looking for a large, comfortable sedan with performance potential.
“Taurus is more of a ‘me’ sedan now, and we’ve delivered with this buyer in mind,” said Moray Callum, director of Ford’s Car and Crossover Design.
There’s certainly more of a sculpted appearance, with a powerdome hood that portrays a powerful road presence, a straightforward grille that Ford dubs as “confident”, and strong fenders capped off by narrow headlight clusters that incorporate recessed parking lamps.
The roofline is lower too, allowing for a sleeker overall appearance and a departure from J Mays New Beetle/VW Passat era of round design, something the original 500/Taurus was criticized for.
New 18- and 19-inch wheels finish off the design statement, adding to its visual strength and hinting at its claimed on-road prowess.
Ford, currently in the best financial shape of the Big 3, is feeling bullish about the new Taurus.
“Customers will find a lot to love about the new Taurus,” added Fields.
The 2010 Ford Taurus will be produced at Ford’s Chicago Assembly Plant and become available at your local dealer this summer.
