Finally Someone Has Made Marketing Cars Fun
In recent years BMW has become one of the more creative marketers in the automotive segment. With cinema quality short films directed by acclaimed filmmakers and featuring mega stars such as Madonna to its production credit, the worlds most recognized premium brand is once again venturing out on an unprecedented path.
This time the X3s target market is somewhat younger than with previous roundel badged products, therefore the piece de resistance is an online video game starring the all-new SUV.
“The X3 greatly expands BMWs potential audience, and at much lower price point than our other Sport Activity Vehicle,” said Jim McDowell, Vice President of Marketing, BMW of North America, LLC. “We designed the X3 for buyers who have a passion for performance while also needing space to be always on the go with their snowboard, mountain bike or kayak.”
Theres no need to be a skilled gamer to travel the virtual wilderness in this Shockwave outdoor sports adventure, as its about as simple to figure out as sending and receiving email. After logging onto www.bmwusa.com/newX3, clicking on X3 Action at left and then registering your game name and email to get started, its off to the slopes.

To be more realistic the game developers might have considered choosing a shopping mall parking lot obstacle course or a change the babys diaper in the back seat in less than two minutes challenge.
Just the same the kayaking game starts out with a fast drive to the top of a mountain in an X3, with the opportunity to collect points on the way up by hitting spinning X3 graphics. Its actually a lot of fun zipping the little SUV around tight mountain corners via the left and right arrows for turning and up and down arrows for propelling it forward and back, with the indestructible X3 bouncing off boulders the size of small houses without even a scratch.
To be fair the game takes into account such details as the weight of the vehicle, the length of its axles and its center of gravity, making the driving experience come across more realistic than the majority of similar web games. Its 3D too, showing surrounding scenery in detail and decent topography, while also allowing the possibility to drive all the way back down the course the wrong way and then turn around and drive up again - if you so choose.
The virtual X3 does an amazing job of traversing rough terrain, although it slips appropriately when attempting to scale extreme verticals covered in snow. After the drive up to the river in the kayaking segment, rally driver becomes kayaking expert and the same controls are used and points system followed on the way to the whitewater finish line.
A similar process continues for the snowboarding and cycling legs of the Iron Man-type competition, with the cycling being the most fun - especially when losing control and watching the bike and rider fly off the end of a cliff, smack on the opposing wall and fall to his doom. Even the speedometer readout at the top left accelerates as the rider freefalls, ending with an abrupt “00 MPH” when he supposedly hits the canyon floor below. Good family fun, as the graphics are G-rated.
The overly drawn out waving at the non-existent crowd at the end of each segment is nauseating to say the least, but overall the game is loads of fun, quite challenging and most importantly, free!
Dont worry if you have an older machine or dial-up internet access either, as the game has been designed to work well on various machines and download speeds. You can also invite a friend to play with you via its “challenge a friend” component. Just email your opponent and they can log on to take you on.
In case youre so enthused with the game that you have to try the real thing for yourself, BMWs objective of course, please take into consideration that, as good as the new X3 is, it wont simply allow you to continue driving after hitting a boulder at 100 mph. Reality bites!
