Pontiac Vibe Shares Accelaration Problems with Toyota Matrix

| February 8, 2010

Today, General Motors announced that it will ship out repair parts for Pontiac Vibe sticking gas pedals to dealers this week.

GM intends to send letters to owners next week with instructions to get in touch with their local Pontiac dealerships after February 22nd to get the precision-cut steel reinforcement bars installed in the pedal, the corporation reported.

The repair job should take about a half an hour.

GM also plans to send a follow-up letter to customers when a solution is ready for the recall of floor mats that interfered with the accelerator pedals. Until then, General Motors says that owners should remove the floor mats from their Vibes.

The Vibe is closely related to the Toyota Matrix, and both models were manufactured in California at New United Motor Manufacturing in a joint venture between Toyota and GM. Both models are included in larger Toyota recalls associated with unintended acceleration.

The Detroit-based automaker reported earlier that it had not received any complaints about the accelerator pedals in Pontiac Vibes prior to the announcement of the recall. Since then, GM has had numerous complaints of unintended acceleration in 2009-2010 Pontiac Vibes.

GM says it will keep in touch with the 99,000 owners of Vibes in the United States and Canada as soon as it has more information.
