Impreza WRX to Get 40 HP Bump for ‘09

With the launch of numerous high-powered sports compacts like the Dodge Caliber SRT4, Mazdaspeed3 and especially the pending introduction of the turbocharged, all wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, Subaru fans haven’t been a particularly happy bunch. The WRX, the rally legend, has been dethroned due to its relatively low horsepower count of a mere 224 ponies versus others that make from 250 to 280 hp.

Subaru’s response has been to give the consumer exactly what they want – more power. The WRX will increase its output to a speculated 265 hp, a neat forty horsepower increase over the current model, which should squelch any arguments over power from the Subie camp. To differentiate the new model from old, the WRX will also gain an STI-style grille, different alloy wheels and the aero kit as standard equipment. Inside, the interior will feature red stitching for a bit of extra visual punch. Vehicles that feature the Premium Package will also receive a sunroof as standard equipment.

One thing that will change is the availability of an automatic transmission on the WRX. If you want the extra power, you’ll have to shift gears and actuate the clutch pedal yourself. For those who can’t do without, Subaru is launching a new model that should solve the problem. The GT will pair the WRX’s current 224-hp turbo flat-four with the four-speed automatic.

The revised WRX and new Impreza GT will go on sale later this year, although pricing has yet to be confirmed. Expect its sticker to be set similarly to if not less than Mitsubishi’s Lancer Ralliart, which will offer the SST twin-clutch transmission as standard equipment.
