What Exactly Constitutes Improper Lane Changing?

A citation for an improper lane change can encompass any number of moving violations. Each state defines the improper lane change differently, but the definition is typically somewhat vague. Consequently, law enforcement officers ultimately have the final say on what is or is not a safe lane change. For the most part, states define a lane change as improper if the driver switched lanes without ensuring that it was a safe place and time to do so. A list of specific violations that constitute improper lane changing is provided below.

  • Failure to signal. If you did not use your turn signal or did not leave it on for a sufficient time, you could be cited for an improper lane change.
  • Changing more than one lane at a time. Traffic laws usually prohibit drivers from switching more than one traffic lane at a time. The protocol for crossing multiple lanes is to signal, switch one lane, pause, signal again, change one lane, and repeat if necessary for additional lane changes.
  • Switching lanes separated by solid lines. Lane changing is prohibited in all areas marked by a solid yellow or white line, both single and double. If you switch lanes not separated by dashed or dotted lines, you might receive an improper lane change ticket.
  • Speeding up to switch lanes. Switching lanes at an elevated speed can be dangerous and may qualify as both a speeding and improper lane change violation.
  • Changing lanes in an intersection. Changing lanes immediately before an intersection or in an intersection is prohibited.
  • Changing lanes in a school zone. Switching lanes in a school zone may carry heavier fines and penalties than an improper lane change elsewhere.
  • Cutting another driver off while changing lanes. If another vehicle in another lane is too close to you to safely switch lanes, you cannot switch lanes and cut the other driver off. If an accident occurred and you had committed this kind of improper lane change, you may be found at fault.
