The Mazda automobile company is a Japanese-based automaker well known for making fun and sporty vehicles. It started in Japan in 1920 as Toyo Cork Kogyo Co., as a manufacturing tool company. When it switched to vehicles in 1931, it was renamed Mazda-Go. Mazda gained popularity with consumers with its RX line of vehicles (such as the RX-7 and RX-8), and of course the famous Mazda Miata roadster. |
Mazda did hit financial troubles in the 1960s and started a partnership with Ford Motor Company. By 2008, Ford lost its controlling interest in Mazda. Among its latest innovations is a plug-in car set to compete with the Chevy Volt. |
