New Dodge Caliber is Selling Out in Europe

Bold American Styling and Value Driven Pricing Winning Over Europeans
Its been a long time since a domestic automaker has enjoyed a major hit in Europe. Actually, its difficult to remember such an event ever occurring. Certainly Mustangs and Corvettes have sold moderately well over the years, but nothing quite like Dodges new Caliber.
Caliber has been selling out in North American showrooms this summer, no doubt thrilling Chrysler Group dealers that up until recently were creatively trying to find ways to push Neon sedans off their lots despite the bevy of deep incentives offered by Auburn Hills.
AutoWeek magazine reports that Dodge, a completely new brand in Europe (the Viper was previously sold under the Chrysler banner), completely underestimated European demand for the edgy crossover-style five-door wagon. Now, a waiting list that stretches six month has formed.
“We underestimated demand for the product,” said Thomas Hausch, Chryslers executive director of international sales and marketing to Automotive News Europe.
Amazingly, Dodge has not only delivered more Calibers to Western European customers in the last three months than it sold in its entire lineup of cars all of last year, but at 3,238 Calibers down the road this summer it has delivered more than ten times the 311 vehicles that went out the door in 2005.
Without doubt the Calibers base price of 14,990 euros in Germany has been an important reason why its succeeding; although its important to note that Americans can buy the innovative little hatchback for $13,425 USD, the equivalent of 10,585 euros (or in other words Europeans are spending $19,011 USD for a base Caliber and thinking that its a good deal). Compared to other vehicles available to these Europeans, however, the Calibers price is an excellent value, especially considering it is well equipped in standard trim, offers reasonably good driving dynamics and looks unique and exciting.
According to a UK-based market researcher, JATO Dynamics, Chrysler sold a total of 92,951 vehicles in Europe last year, down from 97,551 sold the year prior, but now with Dodge in the mix, the lowest priced Chrysler Group brand in Europe, just like it is in North America, sales should rise considerably. Actually, DaimlerChryslers Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep division hopes to double its market share in Europe to 1.4 percent by 2009, which would represent 200,000 units sold per year, and as long as it can keep up to demand with the Caliber, a problem that could be exacerbated with the introduction of the Jeep Compass and Patriot which are made in the same U.S. plant in Belvidere, Illinois, its expectations seem conservative.
Chrysler Group is the third fastest growing automaker in Western Europe so for this year at 14.5 percent for the first six months of 2006, according to the ACEA (European Car Manufacturers Association), compared to the same period the year before. In first place is Fiat, up 26.1 percent, followed by Saab up 24.4 percent.
Chrysler Group expects to continue its growth in Europe thanks to the availability of more diesel-powered models, critical on the fuel conscious continent.
