In Porsche’s never-ending quest to perfect the rear-engine sports car, its coupe-convertible combination Targa model is next up for updates already announced for the rest of its 2009 911 lineup.

The general shape of the car remains the same as it has been since this particular Targa body style was introduced in 2001 as a 2002 model. Topped with a 16.58 square-foot retractable glass roof that quickly (about seven seconds) and neatly tucks under the rear window, and a separately sliding sunshade, it combines for a best of both worlds scenario of open-top convertible and closed-top coupe, without the loss of structural rigidity and weight gain of a true convertible.

With the top in place the rear glass can be popped open to access a small rear storage area that combines with the 911’s already large front trunk for one of the most livable sports cars anywhere.

Updates for the 2009 Targa 4 and Targa 4S include a new touch-screen infotainment system dubbed Porsche Communication Management (PCM). As is all the fashion now, PCM features an integrated hard-drive for music and navigation system storage, if equipped, plus it boasts a USB port and Bluetooth and iPod connectivity. XM satellite radio can also be had. The navigation system, by the way, can report real-time Nav-Traffic reports to help smooth out the commute home.

Following changes made to other 2009 911 models, the Targa 4 gets a revised 3.6-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder that now makes 345 horsepower, while the Targa 4S comes with the new 385-horsepower 3.8-liter flat-six.

Even better news for Tiptronic buyers is the integration of a new clutchless-manual, or sequential-manual transmission. Porsche’s new gearbox is dubbed PDK, for Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (say that three times quickly… or even once), which means double-clutch. That, of course, translates into seriously quick shifts and no more excuses needed for buying an autobox.

The new Targas will soon join the updated 2009 coupe and cabriolet, already available.
