New Kia Sedona to Debut at Chicago Auto Show
Second-Generation Sedona to be Larger, More Powerful and More Refined
Not many expected Kias minivan entry, the Sedona, to be as good as it was when it came onto the scene in 2001 as a 2002 model. Featuring a large V6 engine and top-tier five-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment, plus an accommodating, well put together interior, it was and still is a formidable competitor in the mid-van segment.
Since then, however, every new model the South Korean brand has launched has improved tenfold over its predecessor, with the automakers most recent Spectra winning as many awards as new customers. Truly the brand, now wholly-owned by once-arch-rival Hyundai, is on a roll.
Anyone expecting the second-generation 2006 Sedona to be anything less than stellar had better prepared to look foolish. The van, which will make its world debut at the upcoming Chicago Auto Show next week, the press conference scheduled for 9AM CST, February 10 at McCormick Place, is larger than the outgoing model in every dimension, including overall length, width and wheelbase. It will also offer greater power than the majority of its competitors, plus a 60/40 split rear seat which folds flat into the floor - something the current Sedona lacks.
From the artists rendering, which only depicts the proposed styling from a rear three-quarter view, the new Sedona looks much sportier than the current, conservative design. Wider haunches, protruding taillights and a unique rear quarter window that flips upward as it reaches the vehicles tailgate, give the design an attractive appearance, compared to most in this class. Of course, smaller wheels and corrected proportions (read taller), will reduce the vehicles sporting character considerably from this overzealous drawing.
What can be assured, mind you, is a dramatic improvement in interior fit and finish, including higher grade materials and top-tier switchgear. Why the move upmarket? The Koreans are out to prove they are the best in the world, and are planning to match or beat theyre American, Japanese and even German competition in every field.
While Kia has lagged behind the average in J. D. Power and Associates various studies, especially initial quality and dependability, the fact that it is now building cars that use an extensive inventory of Hyundai components, as well as Hyundai-Kia developed architectures, will bode well for a ratings improvement by some current and all future models.
How long will you have to wait for a new Sedona? The new model is expected to arrive in dealerships across the U.S. in late 2005.
