Porsche Reveals Cayennes New Face and Engines

New Cayenne Debuts Porsche DFI Direct Injection System

A little more than a week ago, we reported that Porsche was preparing the update to its Cayenne sport utility vehicle. For quite some time it was known that the German sports car manufacturer was planning on giving the vehicle a new nose and various other tweaks. True to our prediction (aided by a photo), the changes we noted to the appearance of the Cayenne were correct. Yesterday, Porsche officially revealed photos and specs of the 2008 Cayenne, which will be available starting February 24th of next year.

Though it could be argued that any change in the visual appearance of the Cayenne is important, its the new powerplants that are going to help the Cayenne keep pace with the competition.

Previously, the Cayenne had been the subject of criticism in the engine department, not because its engines were particularly poor, but rather that the perceivably “fast” sport utility vehicle was slower than its counterparts from Volkswagen and Audi. This has changed for 2008, now that Porsche has adopted gasoline direct injection (DFI), which yields more power, up to 8-percent lower fuel consumption and fewer emissions. DFI can now be found on all 2008 Cayenne models, spanning the base to the very top of the line Turbo.

But thats not all. The various engines themselves are completely new. The base Cayenne is powered by a 3.6-liter V6, borrowed from the Touareg V6 and Audi Q7 3.6, though it has been tweaked to produce 290 hp, instead of 280. One thing that separates the new car from the old car is that the old 3.2-liter V6, while derived from a Volkswagen engine, had a different intake system, specifically designed by Porsche; the new V6 is direct copy. Though it hasnt been announced, it also looks like it will no longer be available with a manual gearbox. Nevertheless, its still good enough to take the SUV to 60 mph in just 8.0 seconds, which is an entire second quicker than the old model.

A 300 cc gain, plus DFI could succinctly summarize the changes made to the V8-powered Cayenne S model. The middle of the line engine received these gains as well as Porsches VarioCam Plus variable valve timing system. With more engine displacement, the Cayenne S now makes a healthy 385 horsepower, which is 45 ponies over the previous model. Thats worth 0.2 seconds in the 60 mph dash and 6 mph in top speed; the actual figures are 6.5 seconds and 157 mph.

The net benefits of DFI and the larger engine displacement are even more pronounced on the Cayenne Turbo model, which receives 50 additional horsepower for a grand total of 500. Acceleration is disturbingly quick, taking just 5.0 seconds to hit 60 mph and achieving a top speed of 171 mph. No ones questioning its king of the hill status anymore.
