Revealed: Chevy's Production-Ready Camaro

It was inevitable that the Chevrolet Camaro, one of the hottest cars that the

General is slated to produce, would be leaked onto the internet ahead of its official release.

The reveal process for the 2010 Camaro has been a long, drawn out process that has seen it appear in different forms as concepts, the star in a major blockbuster film, and the subject of an in-depth mock spy photo shoot. But after the long wait, the car is finally here.

The Camaro is pretty much unchanged from its concept car days, with the exception of the head and tail lights. The detail work on the car is downright surprising; the photographed RS model shows HID headlamps with BMW-style corona rings, flush bumpers and a Challenger-style front lip for improved aerodynamics.

At launch, the Camaro will be offered with two engines, a 3.6-liter direct-injection V6 that produces just short of 300 horsepower, and a mighty 6.2-liter V8 that makes in excess of 415 horsepower. The latter engine features cylinder deactivation, which should make running costs more acceptable than otherwise.

The interior is also very similar to the concept car, and errs on the modern side of retro compared to the Dodge Challenger, although there's no shortage of retro cues. From the tall, rectangular main instruments to the rectangular ancillary gauges mounted just before the shifter, it's a treat to anyone who remembers Camaros from the ‘60s and ‘70s.

Based on one of GM's newest platforms, Zeta, the Camaro features a fully independent front and rear suspension, and will also feature StabiliTrak stability control as standard across the board.
