Saab 9-7x Aero Concept Debuts at SEMA
Saab certainly could use something exciting to improve lackluster 9-7x sales, and a production version of the Aero Concept that debuted this week at in Las Vegas Nevadas SEMA aftermarket products show could be it.
This version of Saabs first-ever SUV once and for all leaves behind its utilitarian TrailBlazer roots for a road-hugging, stylish crossover that looks more capable of sliding through an autocross course than it would tackling off-road trails. The concept, prepared by tuning maestros DUB, features 24-inch diameter low-profile rubber at each corner complemented by turbine-look wheels that do more to pay tribute to the brands jet fighter manufacturing heritage than the 5.3-liter overhead-valve V8 that normally resides under the sleek hood.
DUB isnt saying if any engine mods have been completed, so rather than wait for their response we felt like preempting with some ideas of our own. First, dump the stock lump entirely, and either replaced it with Cadillacs supercharged V8 from the STS-V or Chevys impressive 6.0-liter LS2 from the TrailBlazer SS, which in stock trim makes close to 400-horsepower, so with the addition of the easily noticeable Borla exhaust already added to the concept it should not only blat out a nasty snarl but also be able to measure up to the reworked suspension systems new levels of adhesion.
Yes, the three-inch drop should do wonders for the big SUVs center of gravity, and combined with the meaty wheel and tire package should result in amazing grip for a truck-based SUV.
The exterior upgrades look menacing, and include honeycomb grille inserts plus fender vents, which get the same honeycomb treatment. The dark tint is a nice touch too, as are the smoked taillight lenses.
DUB modified the interior with new suede and leather seats and trim, plus wired up a seriously upgraded audio/video system, of course.
While a potential production version of the 9-7x Aero Concept wouldnt get the 24-inch rims and outrageous audio package, Saab might want to consider something a little spicier than its stock SUV to get enthusiasts blood going. Why not build something that would make the Euro division jealous and wish theyd opted to sell the 9-7x across the Atlantic? Something like this new concept could do just that, and spark sales at home too.
