In the eyes of many, Fords new Mustang is one of the best-executed modern-day renditions of a classic, retro car. Its exterior and interior capture the look of the 60s pony car right to a tee, while the optional 300-horsepower V8 can light up the rear tires just as it did some forty years ago. As with the regular production car, the clock has been turned back with Fords best-known partner in tuning, too. Shelby, has worked on the new Stang, creating a couple of different renditions, the awesome, supercharged GT500, as well as an up-to-date version of the old GT-350H called the GT-H.
Since its inception earlier this year, Ford has had great success with the Shelby GT-H. Back in the 60s when Ford owned Hertz Rent-A-Car, it offered a unique, Shelby-tuned Mustang for customers to rent. Known as the Rent-A-Racer program, it attracted a great deal of attention to Hertz and Ford, as no other mainstream rental company had done something like this before. Nearly forty years later, the demand for the new GT-H Coupe is as great as ever, so Ford and Shelby have teamed up to make a convertible version.
Its true that the original GT-350H wasnt available as a convertible, but when the financial side of the equation was taken into consideration, the idea was just too good to be ignored. After all, the Mustang convertibles popularity in the rental car industry is as strong as any. The GT-H Convertible features the same mechanical upgrades as the GT-H Coupe, including the Ford Racing Handling upgrade kit that bumps up the suspension with better springs, dampers and sway bars for improved handling characteristics, as well as the Ford Racing Power Pack, which adds a performance exhaust system, cold air intake and engine computer re-calibration. Appearance-wise, it gains 20-inch American Racing wheels, and the GT-H appearance package that includes gold stripes, billet grille inserts and hood clips.
The GT500 40th doesnt have any upgrades to its 500-hp SVT-developed engine, but Shelby has added a custom Borla exhaust system to amplify its “big-block” sound. The suspension, on the other hand is a different story. Here, Shelby has fitted a coil-over spring kit that it developed with Eibach. This high-performance suspension upgrade gives buyers the ability to adjust the dampers for different driving conditions (street, track), and drops the ride height by 0.8 inches in front and 1.6 inches in back. The car rides on the same wheels as the GT-H Convertible, which gives it a very aggressive stance and almost no ground clearance! In these photos the GT500 and the GT-H look almost identical, but can be told apart by the hood, the grille, and the color of the stripes. The GT500 has two vents on the hood, no billet aluminum grille, and silver stripes.
Both the GT-H Convertible and GT500 40th Anniversary will be available starting 2007; the former, however, can only be rented, not purchased.
