Where most carmakers simply build cars, SUVs and maybe trucks, Honda is one of those odd manufacturers that produce almost everything. From portable generators to jet aircraft, if it’s motorized, Honda probably has a stake in the segment.

It became clear that the Japanese brand had intentions on the currently non-existent (except in movies) robot industry when they introduced Asimo (a name no doubt derived from “I Robot” sci-fi writer Isaac Asimov) a number of years back, and now it appears that Honda has a functional plan for its robotic wizardry.

While we’d all appreciate another set of helping hands around the house to do menial jobs like cleaning and organizing, Honda’s robotics expertise has helped it develop a set of legs for those unable to walk without assistance.

Called the Experimental Walking Assist Device, the “legs” include a set of shoes to hold feet into place and a seat to hold a person’s weight. Two electric motors take care of movement while a lithium-ion battery pack powers the device. It’s  good for two hours of continual walking on a full charge, enough to make a significant difference in the life of someone otherwise unable to get around on their own.

Honda continues to test the robotic legs at one of its factories in Sayama, Saitama, Japan, and hopefully will share their development as progress continues. Whether something for the immediate or unforeseen future, the robotics industry appears to be an important part of Honda’s ongoing plans.
