Midsize SUV Shows New Direction for Fast Growing Japanese Automaker
Suzuki, one of Japans leading compact car and sport utility manufacturers, is ramping up to debut its all-new Concept X at the upcoming North American International Auto Show this January.
The Concept X is the firms first midsize sport utility vehicle concept, designed for and aimed at the rapidly expanding North American market. With emphasis on practicality, functionality, and “infotainment”, the Concept X should deliver to the highest expectations of even the most demanding SUV buyers.
Suzukis design team broke free from the typical upright look of its previous SUVs, trading in stark boxiness for swifter,
sleeker lines. The concept is sharply styled with a pointed nose, flush bumpers and a wraparound grille and headlamp unit. Muscular fenders, inset tailpipes, rear-hinged doors and silver-colored body accents provide additional visual flair.
The concept forges Suzukis new identity which easily fits in with the stylish, road-oriented Nissan Murano and Mitsubishi Endeavor, but the Concept X is far more than a pretty face. Underneath, it features an all-new V6 motor that provides best-in-class power, and a proper full-time all-wheel drive system with low-range gears actuated through a transfer case.
Like the S2 concept which eventually became the European and Japanese market Swift, the Concept X represents a critical component in Suzukis ongoing brand revolution. It is a demonstration of the companys in-house engineering abilities, a much-needed reminder to the North American market that theres more to the brand than rebadged Daewoo-engineered GMDAT products.
The production variant will most likely share basic architecture and components with GM Europes lineup of SUVs, which is to include the Chevrolet S3X, a Fiat SUV, and the next-generation Opel/Vauxhall Frontera.
As with GMs Delta and Epsilon platforms, the basic architecture would be developed by GM Europe, while all other major components such as suspension, engine, exterior and interior design would be left in the hands of the individual brands to ensure unique corporate identity.
The finished product would be the first modern SUV for Suzuki in years, replacing the makeshift seven-seat XL-7 which is based on the crude 15-year old Sidekick body-on-frame chassis. Expect to see a road-going model make its debut some time in the next twelve months.
While few and far between, Suzukis concepts are usually a stunning display of creative styling and ingenious technologies. The Concept X is no exception, and is a sign that Suzukis engineers are still on the ball with whats hot and trendy on todays rapidly changing automotive front.
