The Toyota Motor Corporation got its start in 1935 when its founder, Kiichiro Toyoda, revealed his first vehicle prototype. By the end of the 1940s, Toyota had produced over 100,000 vehicles. Toyota continued to grow in the latter half of the 20th century, tremendously expanding its presence in the United States in the 1980s. In the 1960s, Toyota first introduced the Toyota Corolla, a wildly popular model that is still produced today. |
The Camry is consistently one of the best-selling vehicles in the U.S. and has remained the number-one sedan for years. The introduction of the Prius hybrid in Japan in 1997 proved another boon to Toyota’s already stunning success. Unlike American automakers who continued to produce gas-guzzling SUVs, Toyota developed smaller vehicles with excellent fuel economy. |
