The Volvos that you see here aren’t so-called “art cars”, vehicles that have been painted or modified visually, like the Andy Warhol-painted BMW M1 that ran in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Rather, it’s a new accessory that Volvo is offering to its Swedish C30 customers, which will allow them to further customize their vehicle as an expression of their individuality.

Volvo is offering 20 different official films which customizers can choose from, including wood veneer for that retro woody look, a zebra print, rainbow stripes, pink camouflage, and one that looks like wallpaper you’d expect to see in a children’s nursery - light blue sky with fluffy clouds. Any of these choices will help the glass-backed hatchback stick out in a crowded parking lot.

The good thing about the film is that it can be removed up to two years later without damaging the original paint, which is the lifespan that Volvo has given the skin treatment. It also has a practical effect in that it will ward off stone chips, scrapes and scratches the way those invisible stone guards do. As a way of expressing oneself the film is a neat idea, however it’s an expensive one. To wrap a C30 in the stuff costs $3,130, which, come to think of it, would be about the same price to repaint the car.

The prints will officially go on sale April 7th in Sweden, and there’s no word on whether or not we’ll be getting them here in North America. Somehow, we’re a bit doubtful.
