Although the origins of the automaker trace all the way back to 1901, modern-day Audi got its start as a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group in 1964. After VW acquired ownership of Audi from Daimler-Benz, they launched the 1965 Audi Super 90 range. The first Audi vehicle debuted in the United States in the 1970 model year. In the 1980s, Audi transformed its rather staid, conservative image with the rally-racing inspired Quattro.
