Yataro Iwasaki is the founder of Mitsubishi, and while the company was actually founded in 1870, they didn’t begin producing automobiles until 1917 with its Mitsubishi Model A which was Japan’s first production passenger car. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation wasn't established until 1970, and one year later Chrysler purchased a stake in the company. The Mitsubishi 500, which came out in 1960, marked the beginning of automobile production on a large scale for the company. |
Mitsubishi produced the Colt model under the Dodge brand and by the end of the 70s, its lineup of vehicles included the Lancer and the Galant. In the 1990s, Mitsubishi did well with its Eclipse and 300GT series vehicles sold in the U.S. The company has admitted in recent years that it has covered up vehicle defects which resulted in the arrest of one of the company’s former presidents, but the company continues to thrive in the new millennium with innovative new cars, styling and even green-friendly products to satisfy the diverse American taste in automobiles. |
